Position Summary:
This program provides students a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience during the summer at Kroger’s General Merchandise Office. Selected students will work with a team to gain an understanding of the corporate merchandising function, while working under the supervision of a buyer or a planner. After successful completion of the Kroger General Merchandising Program, students will have the option for interviewing for full time employment in the General Merchandising Training program following graduation. Essential Job Functions:
 
General Merchandising Office- Headquarters in Portland at the Kroger/Fred Meyer campus
 
  • 10 week summer internship
  • Train in a merchandising department in a buying, planning, product development or merchandising role
  • Participate in meetings with upper management, and “lunch n learns” with senior buyers and planners
  • Complete specific internship assignments
  • Complete cumulative project (summary of internship accomplishments) and present to leadership team and general merchandise organization
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of this position with or without reasonable accommodation

  • Would shadow an Assistant Buyer in the following Essential Job Functions for the 10 week summer portion of the internship:
  •  
  • Support Buyers in management of financial and inventory plan, including open to buy budget for department stores.
  • Assist with locating and selecting assortment for the enterprise.
  • Gather new product information from vendors and completes new item set up forms, following up with Magic/PID item setup team as needed to ensure timely item setup.
  • Evaluate and makes vendor return decisions on salvaged merchandise, as required.
  • Interact with warehouses to solve receiving problems.
  • Obtain merchandise samples for weekly advertising meetings.
  • Write markdowns, with Buyer approval.
  • Communicate slate/short shipments to MRA and Planner, as needed.
  • Maintain industry knowledge by studying competitor advertisements, trade publications, and market trends.
  • Perform store tours for competitive comparison.
  • Assists buyer and pricing analyst with competitive price checks. Responsible for maintaining Pricing Strategy database.
  • Assist with research and resolution with bi-way requests.
  • Process all vendor allowances with Buyer approval.
  • Process proofs and recap weekly department advertisements; manages ad sets.
  • Track order for one-time-buys, as needed.
  • Assist with division-specific Enterprise Sales Planning (ESP).
  • Support review of sales and promotional performance by Division.
  • Assists Buyers with other or special projects, as assigned.

  • Minimum Position Qualifications:
  • Junior standing or higher at an accredited college or university pursuing a Bachelor's degree
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; proficient in creative writing and grammar
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint
  • Responds to change as a positive challenge
  • Significant level of multi-tasking required
  • Ability to preserve confidentiality of information
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to work on own initiative
  • Commitment to providing customer service
