Description of the Research or Program Environment
The Critical Agroecological Research Experience lab is a space for students interested in the intersection of social justice and food systems. With mentorship from Dr. Meek, students work on projects that emerge directly from the needs and objectives of grassroots social movements. Work in this lab is largely remote, and self-directed with both periodic virtual and in-person meetings for training, group work, and mentorship.
Undergraduate Position Duties
Story Mapping Researchers: Dr. Meek is looking to work with several students on a variety of "story mapping" research projects. The products of these research projects will be directly utilized by grassroots social movements in Latin America; as a result, this is a research project which will have direct impact on social justice struggles in diverse international locales. Story mapping involves combining narrative data (from interviews, and life histories) with multi-media sources (images, videos, audio) in an online mapping environment. Diverse positions are available based upon individual's skill sets. Learning opportunities: --How to transcribe, translate and synthesize interviews --How to convert interview data into a narrative format --How to build an online map that combines narrative data and multi-media content. Specific tasks include (note different team members will work on different tasks based upon their skills and interests): --Translating, transcribing, and synthesizing qualitative data (from Spanish and/or Portuguese) ---Building compelling narratives ---Designing online maps that are engaging and combine narrative and qualitative data
Minimum Qualifications
There is the opportunity for several students with different qualifications to participate in this research opportunity. One does not need to possess each of these minimum qualifications; for example, you may be proficient in Spanish, but not have experience in cartography; that's totally ok! Similarly, you may be interested in media and online communication, but not have experience in either Spanish or cartography, that's fine as well!!! Minimum qualifications: --Advanced proficiency in Spanish or Portuguese --Experience with digital storytelling --Experience with designing webpages with multi-media (no need for coding; simple drag/drop interface) --Experience with GIS

Flexible based upon student capacity; minimum 5 hours/week
