United Talent Agency

Agent Trainee Intern

January - March 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

The internship at UTA was incredibly immersive and allows interns to explore areas of interest while completing the necessary tasks required as an intern. The mailroom is fast-paced and you will have so many opportunities to take on projects for different departments in the agency. Covering Agent desks are definitely one of the best ways to learn what it takes to be directly involved with clients, agents, and entertainment affairs. During my internship, UTA also offered the opportunity to sit in "UTA U" classes you found interest in (provided to Trainees) if you had the time, giving you insight into certain niche areas of the industry and what to do (i.e. Billing). Because I had specific interest in Branding & Licensing, I had the chance to work on projects for the Music Brand Partnerships Department. I also had the chance to cover for a EVO (Endorsements & Voice Over) Agent that really opened my eyes as to how Entertainment Endorsements work. I definitely would not trade my experiences at UTA for anything.

What I wish was different

I have nothing bad to say about this internship.

Advice

Go in with an open mind: You'll need to be ready to accept criticism left and right, but what matters is how you take it and move on from that. You'll definitely need thick skin to make it in this industry, but that goes for any industry! This internship taught me to be more empathetic, calm, and understanding all while remaining goal-oriented, methodic, and analytical.

Intern

July - August 2017 • New York City, NY

What I liked

It was a fast-paced entertainment environment. I was involved with seeing how this industry works. I specifically enjoyed working with Digital strategy coordinator.

What I wish was different

It was very intense, many interns seemed replaceable. At a talent agency you start in the mail room.

Advice

Go out of your way to help out, memorize peoples names and what they like.

Music Touring Intern

July - September 2017 • Beverly Hills, CA

What I liked

This internship was hands down one of the most beneficial experiences in my professional life to date. United Talent Agency provided me with an eight week crash course on all things entertainment. As an intern, I began in the mailroom where I learned the ins and outs of the industry through clerical tasks and ensuring the agency run smoothly and efficiently. For the first month, I also attended over 30+ hours of intensive training on music and comedy live touring, in United Talent Agency's flagship 'UTA U' educational program. As the summer went on, I was entrusted with higher levels of responsibility - including staffing agent desks as temporary assistants, compiling weekly show lists for all UTA clients and competitors, and even routing tours for various clients.

What I wish was different

There is absolutely nothing about this internship that I would have changed.

Advice

My one piece of advice is to fully immerse yourself. I wholly believe that my success at this agency can be attributed to my eagerness to learn from those around me. I made sure to be the first intern in every morning and the last to leave, which did not go unnoticed. When I wasn't at work, I was attending concerts and searching for new music online so that I was prepared when I came to work each day and had topics to converse with agents about.
